How to convert CSV to IIF
- 1
Drop the CSV and check the columns
Date, description, amount or debit/credit and balance are detected for you. Change any column, the date order or reversed signs.
- 2
Review the transactions
Edit a date, a payee or an amount, flip a sign or delete a line before converting.
- 3
Download the IIF
Set your account names in Export settings, back up your company file, then import it in QuickBooks Desktop.
Account names have to match
IIF imports post to accounts by name. Enter the bank account exactly as it appears in your chart of accounts, plus the accounts the other side should go to (Uncategorized Income and Uncategorized Expenses by default). Payees go into the memo, so the import doesn’t add new names to your lists.
Back up before you import
QuickBooks can’t undo an IIF import. Back up the company file first and try a small file before a large one.
The formats
- CSV
- Comma-separated values: a plain-text table that every bank, spreadsheet and accounting app can read. Banks’ CSVs differ in column names, date order and whether money out is negative or in its own column.
- IIF
- Intuit Interchange Format, QuickBooks Desktop’s tab-separated import file, imported with File › Utilities › Import › IIF Files. QuickBooks Online doesn’t read IIF.
